Distinguished Senators, the Washington Nationals Blog That Is Great

Monday, June 27, 2005

So . . .

I totally forgot to blog! For days! But hey, nobody died or even probably gave a crap, so I hope I can be forgiven my dereliction. Speaking of dereliction, I notice that the first place Washington Nationals failed to draw more than 40,000 fans in any game of the recently concluded weekend series. What the hell's going on? I thought we had all agreed to let ourselves go. I mean, I wasn't there either, but still. I'll be there tomorrow night -- look for the guy with his head buried in his hands while he suffers through at least six three-pitch innings as Josh Fogg has a delightful time with our Nick Johnson-less, Jose Guillen-free lineup. Sweet Caroline!

A BPG thread is saying he's day to day with a bum shoulder.

Boooo, Sweet Caroline! You don't really do that do you? What's next the Washington Rally Chimp? The Homer Handtowel? (Andy) Moog's BBQ?

Yeah, something else! (I vote for Song 2 by Blur. Who doesn't like yelling "Woo Hoo!" I'll tell you who, NOBODY!)

Now Basil, they haven't started losing yet. Yet.

I'm furious about "Sweet Caroline." It's just about the lamest thing they could do. Except for starting Wil Cordero, I suppose.

"Song 2"'s a good idea. I'd go with "Ace of Spades" by Motorhead or "Word Up" by Cameo.

What about Pantera's "Walk"? It made RVD a star. It can do the same for the Nats. Plus it would make perfect sense if Nick or Brad were at the plate (or Armas was on the mound)

Seconded. Anything that's good for RVD is good for the Nats.

As long as they're testing for steroids only. If you get my drift. 4:20!

I agree with Ryan about attendance--what's going on? After a 33 year wait and with a first place team, we should be drawing better. In addition, the Post reported today that the Nats have a higher-than-average no show rate, making the attendance figures weaker still.

Three of the four 1990s expansion teams--all of which went to markets I argued were inferior to DC--drew better in their first year (and the fourth one, Tampa Bay, a horrible market, just barely less). Those teams were never in a pennant race, and only Arizona was playing in a new stadium.

Attendance has been healthy but disappointing and will likely fall during seasons 2 and 3 at RFK. Maybe Washington isn't the phenomenal baseball market I thought it would be. Skeptics have argued that Washington is a town of big events and baseball games don't qualify as big events. Hope they're wrong!

Went to my first Nationals game yesterday and enjoyed it very much. For those who don't like the 6th inning stretch musical selection I say, leave "Sweet Caroline" in. It makes for a nice change of pace and adds a touch of class. Now, for important matters, why not make the teams mascot the Washington GNATS. Instead of arguing about the W or DC on the caps there should be a pesky gnat.
